It’s a new year folks – even if this makes me sound like captain obvious – and as always, every new year is met with resolutions that we go on to dishonor after the first week and a load of expectations. For football, many are left wondering is this would be the year Wayne Rooney finally gives up football and focus on alcohol or whether Antonio Valencia would stop looking like the weather condition of two countries mismatched together on a skin.
Alongside these many expectations, here are football tournaments that football fans need to keep an eye for in the year 2017:
CAF AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS
Will handsome dudes like Saido Mane, Aristide Bance and the likes play in this tournament? Definitely. Will the tournament be interesting? Only time will tell. From 14 January to 5 February, 2017, Gabon will play host to Africa as the biennial tournament, Africa Cup of Nations takes center stage. Too bad the NFF’s adventure with videographer, Sunday Oliseh meant that the Super Eagles won’t be taking part in this one.
CONCACAF GOLD CUP
Ever wondered where countries that have made it a full time duty to bring the round leather game to disrepute by losing by astronomical margins came from? Your guess is as good as mine, they’re from CONCACAF. If you are interested in watching Tahiti lose 23 – 0 to another country that would lose 43 – 0 if it ever get to meets more prominent footballing nations, then brace yourself! CONCACAF Gold Cup will take place between July 7 – 26, 2017.
FIFA CONFEDERATIONS CUP
Right after we must have known who is boss in each of the continent across the world (as far as football is concerned), Russia has decided to play host to them all in a competition called the FIFA Confederations cup. The competition will take place between June and July this year.
UEFA WOMEN’S EURO
We are going to Holland! Wondering why? Because that is where this year’s UEFA Women’s Euro is scheduled to take place. Between 16 July – 6 August, 2017, national teams of different European countries are expected to treat us all to a fierce battle for glory.
And yes, we are only going for footballing reasons. Nothing else.
